Meeting to discuss Friday parking issues

Meeting to discuss Friday parking issues

Locals continue to express concerns regarding the inconsiderate parking of mainly external guests visiting the Masjid for Friday Prayers.

The SCMA committee has contacted the local police as well as the traffic warden office for support. In addition, the surrounding areas are being patrolled, advising attendees not to block driveways, or park on double yellow lines. However, there are still some individuals who continue to park illegally.

To discuss possible solutions concerning this matter, we are inviting our neighbours as well as the local congregation to a meeting on Wednesday 23rd of November 2022 at 8:00pm, held at the Mosque.

This is an open invitation to both local residents and the Sutton Coldfield Masjid attendees.

For those visiting for the first time, please note entry to the mosque will be via the car park on Anchorage Road.

Rabi’ Al-Awwal: The birth of the Prophet

THE SIGNIFICANCE OF THE MONTH

Rabi’ Al-Awwal is the third month of the Hijri calendar. Historians believe it to be the birth month of the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ). There is agreement it occurred in the city of Makkah and in the Year of the Elephant, although the actual birthday is disputed. Most reports suggest the date falls between the 8th and 12th of the month, with the latter being the majority view.

There are no specific rituals recommended to be performed during Rabi’ Al-Awwal.

SPECIFIC HADITHS CONCERNING THE MONTH

Abu Qatadah al-Ansari (رضي الله عنه) said: The Prophet (ﷺ) was asked about fasting on Mondays and he said: “That is a day on which I was born and on it my mission began – or Revelation came to me.” (Narrated by Muslim, 1162)

Safar: Month of the Assassination Attempt

THE SIGNIFICANCE OF THE MONTH

Safar is the second month of the Hijri calendar. There is no religious significance including any specific rituals recommended to be performed during Safar. Interestingly during the pre-Islam era, the Arabs viewed Safar to be unlucky. They would even go as far as to move the month forward and back from its place in the calendar.

HISTORICAL EVENTS

The month was witness to a number of key historical events, the assassination attempt against the Prophet (SAW) being one. The plot involved a man from each opposing tribe simultaneously striking the prophet (SAW). A strategy which ensured each tribe would then be equally liable, and forcing the Quraysh leadership to accept the financial settlement package, as physical retaliation against all the opposing Makkan tribes collectively would not be viable.

Historians report that the Prophet (SAW) outsmarted the attackers using Ali Abi Talib (RA) as a decoy, by having him sleep in his bed while the attackers lie in wait. He (SAW), escaped during the night, and along with Abu Bakr (RA), made his way to the cave of Thawr. The event marks the beginning of the migration journey to Medina.

SPECIFIC HADITHS CONCERNING THE MONTH

It was narrated that Ibn 'Abbas (RA) said: They used to think that ‘umrah during the months of Hajj was one of the worst evils on earth. They would make Muharram Safar and say: when the backs of the camels have healed and the tracks of the pilgrims have become erased and Safar is over, ‘Umrah becomes permissible for those who want to do ‘Umrah. (Bukhari, 1489 & Muslim, 1240)

Muharram: The New Year Begins

THE SIGNIFICANCE OF THE MONTH

Muharram has huge historical significance as it marks the emigration of the Muslims from Makkah to Medina. Historians estimate this took place around 622CE. The event (known as the Hijrah) was a turning point in Islamic history, as it resulted in establishing the first Islamic government. In the Qur'an, Muharram is mentioned as one of the four sacred months of the year.

Muharram is also the month in which the battle of Karbala took place, and Hussain (RA), who was the grandson of the Prophet (SAW), was tragically martyred.

KEY DATES

1st - Islamic new year.
9th - It is recommended to fast on this day, along with the 10th.
10th - The day of 'Ashura. It is recommended to fast on this day.
11th - If you were not able to fast on the 9th then alternatively, it is recommended to fast on this day.

SPECIFIC HADITHS CONCERNING THE MONTH

The Prophet (SAW) came to Madinah and saw the Jews fasting on the day of ‘Ashura. He said, “What is this?” They said, “This is a good day, this is the day when Allah saved the Children of Israel from their enemy and Musa fasted on this day.” He said, “We are closer to Musa than you.” So he fasted on this day and told the people to fast. (Bukhari)

When the Messenger of Allah (SAW) fasted on the day of ‘Ashura and told the people to fast, they said, “O Messenger of Allah, this is a day that is venerated by the Jews and Christians.” The Messenger of Allah (SAW) said, “Next year, if Allah wills, we will fast on the ninth day.” But by the time the following year came, the Messenger of Allah (SAW) had passed away.
