INTERESTED IN ISLAM?

If you are interested in Islam, would like to visit the Masjid or are ready to become a Muslim, Sutton Coldfield Masjid has a welcoming community of Masjid attendees and a team of Imams who would be happy to answer any questions you may have.

Taking the ‘Shahadah’ - or a formal declaration of faith - is the final step in accepting Islam and becoming a Muslim. By undertaking the Shahadah at the Masjid, it gives you a chance to connect with the community and get to know other local Muslims, which can be a valuable source of support in your journey.

  • TELL US ABOUT YOURSELF

I'm currently 20 years old, born and bred in Sutton Coldfield. I'm holding down two jobs at the moment, one is working for a major supermarket brand, and the other conveniently is for their biggest rival.

Before becoming Muslim I would say I didn't have any religious beliefs, but I was always curious about where we were going to end up after we die. I was fascinated by this life and the creation of Allah, the sky, the mountains, the oceans. When I used to go on planes, I used to look down and think: there must be something greater, there must be a creator. That was one of the big things that led me to Islam.

  • HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN MUSLIM?

I've technically been a Muslim for over two years (pretty much to the day), although I've only been practising consistently for about 12 months.

Coming into the religion was simple for me. I did my research, I visited a mosque and started reading an English translation of the Quran. I just wanted to find some peace in my life. And Alhamdulillah over time I grew closer and closer to Allah and Islam.

My family were a bit shocked when I converted, probably the normal response. My dad has been supportive though, he's even visited the Masjid and met Imam Siraj.

  • WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO A NEW MUSLIM?

If you're thinking about converting, just go for it, you won't regret it. I'm not saying it's going to be easy but when you think about it, what is life without Allah? We so need Him in our lives.

Anyone who does convert, I'd advise them to take things slow. Go to one or two people for advice, and make sure you visit your local mosque. Don't overwhelm yourself. If I could go back to when I was a new Muslim, I would tell myself not to beat myself up in terms of learning about the religion. Progression will be gradual, you'll love the Quran and will want perfection straight away. But learning is done slowly, and when things get difficult, take a step back to regroup. Alhamdulillah.

  • WHAT'S YOUR FAVOURITE VERSE FROM THE QURAN?

I quite like the verse from Surah Duhaa: "Did He not find you unguided then guided you?" [93:7].

I also like verse 103 of Surah Imran: "And hold firmly to the rope of Allah and do not be divided. Remember Allah’s favour upon you when you were enemies, then He united your hearts, so you—by His grace—became brothers. And you were at the brink of a fiery pit and He saved you from it. This is how Allah makes His revelations clear to you, so that you may be ˹rightly˺ guided." [3:103].

  • TELL US ABOUT YOURSELF

I was born in Birmingham, and live in the Sutton Coldfield area. My country of heritage is Guyana, which is located in South America.

I work as a financial advisor and educator. However, I have recently changed my profession in hopes of doing something more meaningful. I am currently working as a residential support worker, working in a local children's home Alhamdulillah. I really love my new career path as it allows me to assist in the development and support of children who have not had the best start, with the aim to help them deal with their traumas using a therapeutic model. In hopes to prepare them for adulthood.

  • HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN MUSLIM?

I reverted to Islam on April 6th 2022, Alhamdulillah. It has been a little over one year, and might I say, one of the best years of my life, SubhanAllah.

My friends and family were very supportive. Naturally they had questions and from time to time they ask me how I'm getting on, and they are interested in hearing how it has helped me.

I love the ongoing personal development aspect of being Muslim, in regards to the discipline that is needed and holding myself accountable. Building a closer relationship with Allah SWT has been very special to me as this is what I yearned for, for many years, lastly, being apart of our beautiful Ummah.

  • WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO A NEW MUSLIM?

Finding your local community will be a massive help on your journey, as they are there to support you. The love, support and encouragement that I have experienced at the Sutton Coldfield Masjid has been amazing.

Spending Ramadan at the Masjid for the first time was incredible. I was able to meet many sisters who were very welcoming. Attending programmes at the Masjid, such as Sister's circle, Quran studies, and volunteering at the Girls Youth Group, have been a learning experience as well as a fullfilling one.

There is lots to learn and you will continue to learn each day. Try not to get too overwhelmed and take it day by day as this is a change in your lifestyle which will take time to adapt to. InshaAllah, Allah will make it easy for you.

  • WHAT'S YOUR FAVOURITE VERSE FROM THE QURAN?

Al Baqara 2:285 - 2:286 has many great benefits. These two Ayat often gives me great guidance, peace and a reminder that Allah SWT is our Lord and would not give us more than we can bear.

In situations where I feel I do not have the strength to face tough challenges, going back to these Ayat can be very uplifting.
